Machine Control: Activity 3.1.1 Inputs and Outputs

1. Examine the wire diagram on the mini switch and describe how the diagram relates to the concepts of normally open and normally closed.

On the diagram, the #2 connection has a line connected to the #3 connection.  This means that when two wires are connected to the #2 and #3 connections, the switch is normally closed when the switch is not pressed.  The switch would be normally open if the wires were connected to the #2 and #1 connections instead.

2. If computers only understand digital signals, then how is a computer able to interpret the analog signals coming from the interface?

The analog signals are transformed into digital signals by going through an ADC (analog/digital converter).
3. Why does resistance decrease as the NTC Resistor becomes warmer?

An NTC Resistor is also known as a thermistor.  Thermistors change resistance when the temperature changes and the temperature and the resistance are inversely proportional to each other.  That means that the resistance increases when the temperature decreases and also decreases when the temperature increases.
